How the math works
Pixels equal inches times DPI, once for each side.
A 10 x 11 inch print at 300 DPI needs 10 times 300 pixels across and 11 times 300 down, so 3000 x 3300. At 150 DPI the same print needs half of that, 1500 x 1650.
Px to inches works the other way: divide by the DPI. A 3000 px wide file prints 10 inches at 300 DPI, 20 at 150 and 5 at 600. One inch of paper holds 300 px at 300 DPI and 150 at 150.
The DPI in the formula is always per inch, so switching the fields to cm or mm only changes the size you type. 300 mm is 11.81 inches, and at 300 DPI that is 3543 pixels.
For what the DPI value itself means and where it sits inside the file, see what is DPI.

03
Which DPI to pick
Three values cover most jobs. A print provider that names its own number overrides them.
300 DPI is the default for photos, ID uploads and books. 150 DPI suits posters and banners read from a few feet away. 600 DPI is for line art, scans and fine text, where the edges are the point.
A higher value does not add detail: it asks for pixels the file may not hold, and the print gets smaller. To read what a file carries, use the DPI checker. To rewrite that label, the DPI converter does it without touching the pixels.
04
When the file has fewer pixels
A file that holds fewer pixels than the answer cannot fill that size at that DPI.
If the answer is 3000 x 3300 and the photo holds 2000 x 2200, there are two options. Print smaller: 2000 pixels at 300 DPI gives 6.67 inches across. Or accept a lower density: the same file at 200 DPI fills 10 inches, with softer edges.
Upscaling adds pixels by interpolation. The enlargement looks smoother, and detail the camera never recorded stays missing.
Print size questions people ask
How many pixels is 8.5 x 11 at 300 DPI?
2550 x 3300 pixels, about 8.4 megapixels. At 150 DPI the same sheet needs 1275 x 1650.
How do I convert DPI to pixels?
Multiply each side in inches by the DPI. Four inches at 300 DPI is 1200 pixels, and 10 x 11 inches is 3000 x 3300.
How many pixels are in an inch?
The DPI value itself. 300 DPI means 300 pixels in an inch and 150 DPI means 150, which is why a 4 x 6 inch photo at 300 DPI needs 1200 x 1800 pixels.
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide each side by the DPI. A 2400 x 3000 pixel file at 300 DPI prints 8 x 10 inches, and the same file at 150 DPI prints 16 x 20.
How many pixels is a 4 x 6 photo?
1200 x 1800 at 300 DPI, or 600 x 900 at 150 DPI.
What DPI should I use for a poster?
150 for a poster read from a few feet away, which makes a 24 x 36 inch poster 3600 x 5400 pixels. Anything read up close wants 300.
Is 300 DPI enough for printing?
For photos, ID uploads and books held in the hand, yes, as long as the file holds those pixels. Line art, fine text and many fine-art prints go to 600.
